Loton Park 12 July 2014

I had my first outing in the Lotus today at Loton Park.  Awesome acceleration but very scary handling compared to the Formula Ford, tail ready to break away on the twisty bits and it seems to wander slightly on the ‘straight’, but I guess my confidence will grow with familiarity.    Today my best time of 63.53 was good enough for a class win, though to be fair it was the best car in the class.

There were twenty Ferraris present but only three faster than the Lotus.

Tomorrow I’m back at Loton sharing the Elise with Alan Goodwin who used to own it a few years back.

  1. I’m sure it feels good to have your first event under your belt. Having recently bought a mid engined car myself (an MG TF 160) and completed one or two events in it ( I participated in the Loton Hillclimb school on the 9th July) I know that mid engined cars are different; hopefully we will both get the hang of them soon. Mine has very light steering, and also takes some concentration to keep on a straight line.

  2. Look forward to meeting you at Loton soon. I was thinking of going to the Driving School. Would you recommend it?

  3. I have competed regularly in hillclimbs and sprints in he past; albeit the last time I competed was in 2003.
The hillclimb school was a great way to get back into driving; and indulging my passion for Loton at the same time!
Its untimed, which is good in one way, because you can concentrate on the lines and the feedback from the instructors, without feeling you are ‘wasting’ runs. We got 10 on the day (I believe 10-12 is the norm).
Being untimed, however, means that its difficult to say whether you have improved or not. I certainly felt more comfortable by the end of the day, and learnt quite a bit more about Loton, my favourite hill.
There was an excellent buffet lunch; and sat during the lunch hour, sharing experiences with fellow participants, whilst also listening to Roger Moran’s words of wisdom about the correct way to tackle Cedar ‘straight’, in the sunshine, and all in the paddock at Loton, is something I’ll remember for some time.
I will certainly be looking at doing the school again next year, which must say something!
I keep on meaning to introduce myself in the paddock at Loton, will speak with you nxt time our visits coincide!

  4. I’ve got a place in next Wednesday’s school and am competing on 9/10 August so will be able to judge its value very soon afterwards! Will report back here as usual.
