The MX5 owner’s club had their annual rally at Mallory Park in September and Mazda On Track organised a track day to be part of the day’s activities. I had two 20 minute sessions, one with an instructor sitting alongside. This was, to be honest, much better instruction than at the MAC Sprint School where the instructors stand around the circuit making notes and then provide feedback and instruction between runs. If someone’s sitting next to you and yells Don’t lift off! you’ll keep your foot flat to the floor. Without him there, there’s the tendency to question it. My instructor was a young guy called Al, I think, and he was excellent. The car went fine and handled well but after 20 minutes the brakes stank.
